New Lutetia has legal blood sports where contestants fight to ‘first blood’, ‘until yield’ and ‘until death’. These are primarily boxing and other unarmed combat styles, and hand weapon combat styles (such as sword). Gladiators are very well paid for fighting, even at the lowest levels, and sometimes it is used as a method for the impoverished to raise themselves or their families out of the lowest classes of society. A few other places in the world practice gladiator combat as well, but it was outlawed as barbaric in the Belgravian Republic about 50 years ago.
